Prioritising projects

The Planning exercise has been devised to allow groups to jointly explore:

  • the way that the projects selected in the projects game might develop
  • when they should happen and in what sequence
  • the relative importance of each project
  • other actions that might be required to make the projects happen.

Players work on an A1 "Action Sheet" which plots timescale (short, medium or long Ð the players decide the duration of these depending on the local situation) against priority (high, medium or low).

The cards are debated by small groups and placed in this matrix. Supporting projects are added by the creation of post-it notes. Copies of these are also written for the other groups so that everyone is working with the same set of main and supporting projects. Here's an illustration of the result.

The session ends with feedback from the groups. The results can be analysed to show:

  • the degree of agreement across all groups on both timescale and priority
  • the spread of suggested supporting projects that might be needed to make the programme happen

These results can be used to prepare a forward plan.
