Research

One
of the first steps in planning an online initiative is to
carry out research on several fronts:
Refresh
your knowledge of Internet basics and benefits. See the starting
section.
Undertake
research on the Net into similar projects.
Check
on new opportunities in the field, and available resources.
However, avoid the temptation to be funding led - designing
your project solely to chase the latest grants - unless it
fits your vision.
Review
what is already happening in your area, going outside your
usual range of contacts. You will probably be surprised to
find out what is in progress and what is planned. Here's
a checklist for an audit.
Draw
up a list of contacts to make in your next step - networking.
Consider who may be able to help - and who may be put out
if you don't get in touch and they hear about your project
later. Here's a checklist.
One of the big barriers to progress is 'not invented here'
- so early contact with key people is always worthwhile.
Consider
also any ways in which you may be able to find out what your
user need through surveys, workshops, or studies that others
have already conducted.
