This section describes the main planning 'game' used in workshops with housing associations, and also other tools that can be used as part of the process to design use of ICTs. They have been developed by David Wilcox with games and simulations designer Drew Mackie.

Routemap

The routemap lays out the research, networking, events and other development needed from start-up to action. It offers a timeline for using other planning tools. The routemap in detail

The planning framework

The planning framework provides checklists to complement the routemap. It covers

  • The differenet stages from getting started to keeping going along the route
  • Issues including developing projects, choosing technology, building partnerships that will arise.

There are also some reality checks to help you think about whether you are on track. More here on the planning framework >

The planning sheet

The planning sheet is a matrix of stages against issues, reflecting the framework and routemap. It can be used in workshop to promote and record discussion about the planning process. Planning sheet >

Focus of benefit

The focus of benefit sheet is a tool to promote discussion about:

  • Where the focus of the programme should be: delivering services; community development and social inclusion; life long learning.
  • How benefits will be achieved: getting information; communicating and collaborating; getting noticed; being more effective.

It can be useful in deciding what project ideas should form part of the planning game (see below). More on focus of benefit >

Planning game

The planning game is the main tool that we used with housing associations in order to vision and plan developments. It is played in groups who:

  • Discuss and agree on the challenges and benefits that they are seeking.
  • Reflect on the focus of benefit
  • Consider a range of project ideas, on cards, that might yield those benefits.
  • Choose the most appropriate cards within a budget constraint, prioritise them, and develop an action plan along a timeline.
  • Review the resources and collaborations that will be needed.

Project ideas

We have developed a list of project ideas, ranging from providing access and equipment to services online and learning content. Some of these from the basis for cards in the planning game. More here on project ideas >.
